Madhubani art — also known as Mithila painting — is one of India's oldest living folk art traditions, originating in the Mithila region of Bihar over 2,500 years ago. It was traditionally painted by women on the mud walls of homes during festivals, weddings, and religious ceremonies, using natural dyes made from plants, flowers, and minerals. Today, these same motifs — peacocks, fish, elephants, lotus blooms, and mythological scenes — are brought to life on silk by artisans who have inherited this art through their families.

How do I care for a hand-painted silk saree?

Hand-painted silk sarees are best dry cleaned to preserve both the silk and the natural dye colours — this is the single most important care step. If you prefer home washing, use cold water with a very mild detergent, handle gently by hand, and never wring or twist the fabric. Always dry flat in the shade away from direct sunlight, and when ironing, use a low setting on the reverse side only — never apply an iron directly to the painted surface.
